Look everywhere and you will see people wearing sneakers whether they are Adidas, Nike, Reebok or Yeezy. These flat-soled shoes are now fundamental fashion items for the old and the young. Rare and exclusive designs, such as the Yeezy, have become valuable collectibles and the Yeezy Boost 350s are among the hottest commodities. They used to sell out within minutes of release and resold for up to 10 times the original price on eBay. Now cheap Yeezys are available. How did Yeezys and other sports shoes become universally preferred footwear?
Loan tennis is one of the sports created as a leisure pursuit for the middle-class people during the industrial revolution in the 1800s. It was effectively marketed in the 1870s and became popular quite fast in the UK, Europe, America then the rest of the world. Manufacturers created special shoes for the game that prevented slipping on grass. Modern sports shoes are descendants of those early shoes.
Within a short time, the lawn tennis shoe was being worn off the court, especially by young men. The shoes were fashionable and gave young men a masculine, athletic, and fashion style that became popular. Soon athletic shoes were being made and marketed for different sports such as running, cycling, walking and basketball.
The market for the sneakers grew steadily as the shoes were endorsed by popular athletes. For example, US basketball player Chuck Taylor promoted the Converse All Stars in the 1920s.
The love for sports shoes has continued. It is easy to become a collector of sneakers if a desire for them is sparked during teenage years. That is how sports shoes evolved into fashion items among adults. For quite some time the sneaker manufacturers worried about damaging their sports brands by moving too far into the fashion market. Eventually, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, they found ways to segment and differentiate their brands. Now they run fashion lines and sports lines and these two segments co-exist without friction.
The sneakers give an air of youthfulness and vibrancy which is valued in the Western culture. That is part of the appeal of the sneakers but, ultimately, the enduring appeal is due to the shoe’s connection to sports which elevates the shoes in the eyes of consumers. This appeal is what the Yeezys leveraged on to begin with.
It’s no wonder that the Yeezys are hot. They are beautifully and uniquely designed. The trademark cushioned innersoles and ultra-soft interior padding provide great comfort. The level of detail on every shoe is perfect. Every pair is finely crafted with various colors that give the Yeezys an unmistakable design. They are stylish too and well marketed.
Yeezys have a cult-like following on social media and they are worth the hype. Their price is tough on the wallet but they bestow an exclusive status on the wearer, and the wearer actually looks cool in them. The countless head-turns and compliments are worthwhile. In 2016, at an Adidas Basketball event in Las Vegas, NBA superstars such as Derrick Rose, Damian Lillard, James Harden and Andrew Wiggins confirmed that they love Yeezys and they would be happy to collaborate with Kanye West on designing their shoes.
